End-User License Agreement for Feather

Effective Date: March 26, 2026

1. Introduction

This End-User License Agreement (“EULA”) is a legal agreement between you (either an individual or an entity) and Ventana Tools LLC (“Ventana”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) regarding your use of Feather Markdown Editor (“Feather” or “Software”), a desktop markdown editor for Windows. License keys are purchased through Lemon Squeezy, LLC (a Stripe company), our payment provider. The Software is available for download through the Microsoft Store and our website. You can manage your orders and license keys through the Lemon Squeezy customer portal.

By installing, copying, or using Feather, you agree to be bound by this Agreement. If you do not agree, do not install or use the Software.

2. License Grant

Ventana grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, perpetual license to install and use Feather on Windows devices according to the license tier you have purchased:

  • Individual License — Up to 2 personal devices, 1 license key.
  • Team License — Up to 10 devices (seats), 1 license key.

This license is perpetual for the current major version of Feather (e.g., all 1.x releases). Future major versions (e.g., Feather 2) are not covered by this license and would require a separate purchase.

3. Trial Period

Feather includes a 14-day free trial beginning on first launch. During the trial, all features are fully available. After the trial expires, the Software enters read-only mode:

Allowed in read-only mode:

  • Opening and viewing files
  • Navigating between tabs and view modes
  • Accessing settings and the license dialog

Blocked in read-only mode:

  • Editing document content
  • Saving or creating files
  • Exporting (PDF, HTML, DOCX)
  • Formatting commands

To restore full functionality, activate a valid license key purchased from Ventana.

4. Activation and Internet Use

  • An internet connection is required to activate your license key.
  • The Software periodically re-validates your license in the background (no more than once per launch, and only if more than 24 hours have elapsed since the last check). This ensures your license remains valid and active.
  • An offline grace period of 7 days is provided — if the Software cannot reach the activation server, your license remains active for up to 7 days from the last successful validation. Beyond that, the Software enters read-only mode until a connection can be established.
  • The Software also checks for updates via the internet.
  • No other internet communication occurs. Feather does not collect telemetry, analytics, usage data, or document content.

5. License Key Restrictions

  • Your license key is personal to you (Individual) or your organization (Team).
  • Do not share, publish, or distribute your license key.
  • Do not sell, transfer, or sublicense your license key to third parties.
  • If you believe your key has been compromised, contact us at support@ventana.tools.

6. License Restrictions

You may not:

  • Copy, redistribute, or resell the Software;
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code of the Software;
  • Modify, adapt, translate, or create derivative works based on the Software;
  • Remove, alter, or obscure any proprietary notices, labels, or branding in the Software;
  • Circumvent, disable, or interfere with the trial system, license activation, or any other security or access-control features;
  • Use the Software for any unlawful purpose.

7. Intellectual Property Rights

The Software is licensed, not sold. Ventana Tools LLC retains all right, title, and interest in and to the Software, including all intellectual property rights. This Agreement does not grant you any ownership rights in the Software.

8. Updates

Your license includes all updates within the current major version at no additional cost. Updates may include bug fixes, performance improvements, and new features. Updates are delivered through:

  • Microsoft Store — Managed by the Store.
  • Sideload installations — Managed by Windows via the .appinstaller mechanism.

Updated versions of the Software remain subject to this Agreement unless accompanied by a new agreement.

9. Data and Privacy

Feather is a local-first application:

  • All document editing happens locally on your device.
  • Your files are never uploaded, transmitted, or accessed by Ventana.
  • No telemetry, analytics, crash reports, or usage data is collected.
  • Internet access is used exclusively for license activation/validation and update checks.

10. File Handling

Feather creates and modifies files locally on your device. You are solely responsible for:

  • Maintaining adequate backups of your files;
  • Verifying the output of any export operations (PDF, HTML, DOCX);
  • Ensuring you do not overwrite important files.

Ventana is not responsible for data loss, file corruption, or unsaved changes resulting from software behavior, crashes, power loss, or any other cause.

11. Third-Party Components

Feather incorporates open-source libraries, including but not limited to:

  • Markdig — Markdown parsing and rendering (BSD-2-Clause)
  • Microsoft.Web.WebView2 — Preview pane rendering (Microsoft)
  • CommunityToolkit.Mvvm — MVVM framework (MIT)
  • CommunityToolkit.WinUI — UI controls (MIT)
  • Serilog — Logging (Apache-2.0)
  • KaTeX — Math rendering (MIT)
  • Mermaid — Diagram rendering (MIT)
  • highlight.js — Code syntax highlighting (BSD-3-Clause)

These components are subject to their respective license terms.

12. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Software is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. Ventana does not warrant that the Software will meet your requirements, operate without interruption, or be free from errors or harmful components.

13. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall Ventana Tools LLC be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, loss of goodwill, or business interruption, arising out of or related to your use of or inability to use the Software.

Ventana's total aggregate liability shall not exceed the amount actually paid by you for the Software license.

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Ventana Tools LLC and its officers, directors, and employees from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your use of the Software or violation of this Agreement.

15. Termination

This Agreement is effective until terminated. It will terminate automatically if you fail to comply with any of its terms. Upon termination:

  • You must cease all use of the Software.
  • You must uninstall and delete all copies of the Software from your devices.
  • Your license key will be deactivated.

Sections relating to intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law survive termination.

16. Modification of Agreement

Ventana may update this Agreement from time to time. We will provide notice of material changes through our website or within the Software at least 30 days before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the Software after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Agreement.

17. Severability

If any provision of this Agreement is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

18. Governing Law

This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any legal action arising under this Agreement shall be brought in the courts located in Delaware.
