End-User License Agreement for Feather

Effective Date: September 16, 2026

1. Introduction

This End-User License Agreement (“EULA”) is a legal agreement between you (either an individual or an entity) and Ventana Tools LLC (“Ventana”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) regarding your use of Feather (“Feather” or “Software”), our Markdown editor, on every platform we publish it for:

  • Feather for Windows, available through the Microsoft Store and our website, licensed with a license key purchased through Lemon Squeezy, LLC (a Stripe company), our payment provider. You can manage your orders and license keys through the Lemon Squeezy customer portal.
  • Feather for Android, available through Google Play, unlocked with a one-time in-app purchase sold by Google, or by verifying a Feather for Windows purchase as described in Section 2.3.
  • Feather for iOS, for iPhone and iPad, available through the App Store, unlocked with a one-time in-app purchase sold by Apple, or by verifying a Feather for Windows purchase as described in Section 2.3.

By installing, copying, or using Feather, you agree to be bound by this Agreement. If you do not agree, do not install or use the Software.

2. License Grant

Ventana grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, perpetual license to install and use Feather, on the terms below. The license is perpetual for the current major version of Feather (for example, all 1.x releases). Future major versions (for example, Feather 2) are not covered and would require a separate purchase.

2.1 Feather for Windows

Use on Windows devices according to the license tier you purchased:

  • Individual License — Up to 2 personal devices, 1 license key.
  • Team License — Up to 10 devices (seats), 1 license key.

2.2 Feather for Android and Feather for iOS

The one-time in-app purchase grants a lifetime license for Feather on that platform to the account that bought it — your Google account on Android, your Apple Account on iOS — on the devices that account uses, subject to that store's own rules for purchases and refunds. There is no license key, no seat count, and no sign-in.

On iOS, use is also subject to the Usage Rules in Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions, and the license is to use Feather on Apple-branded devices that you own or control. Family Sharing is not enabled for Feather's purchases on either store, so each account buys and holds its own.

2.3 Feather for Windows owners

If you own a Feather for Windows license, you may unlock Feather for Android or Feather for iOS at no additional charge by verifying the email address you bought it with. This is an extension of the license you already hold, not a transfer of it: it does not consume a Windows device seat, it does not move your Windows license to another person, and it applies to the installation that was verified. It lasts as long as the Windows purchase behind it remains valid, and ends if that purchase is refunded or revoked.

2.4 Platforms are licensed separately

Except as stated in Section 2.3, a license for one platform does not include another. Buying Feather for Android does not license Feather for Windows.

3. Trial Period

Feather includes a 14-day free trial. On Windows and Android it begins the first time you run a version that includes licensing. On iOS the trial is offered as a free item in the App Store, which is how Apple asks a pay-once app to present one: taking it starts your 14 days against your Apple Account, so reinstalling does not start them over. Family Sharing is not enabled for it either. During the trial, all features are fully available. When the trial ends, the Software enters read-only mode until it is unlocked.

Allowed in read-only mode:

  • Opening and viewing files, and using the preview
  • Selecting and copying text, searching, and browsing your files and folders
  • Navigating between tabs and view modes
  • Accessing settings and the license or unlock screen

Blocked in read-only mode:

  • Editing document content and formatting commands
  • Saving, creating, renaming, moving, or deleting files
  • Exporting and printing, and sharing content to other apps
  • On Android, the Feather actions offered to other apps

Text you have already written is never discarded. When a trial ends, Feather stops accepting input first, then saves what it safely can, and keeps anything it cannot save in its local recovery store. Text written before the trial ended can still be copied out or saved to a new file. Unlocking Feather restores full functionality immediately, including saving work that was waiting.

4. Activation and Internet Use

4.1 Feather for Windows

  • An internet connection is required to activate your license key.
  • The Software periodically re-validates your license in the background (no more than once per launch, and only if more than 24 hours have elapsed since the last check). This ensures your license remains valid and active.
  • An offline grace period of 7 days is provided — if the Software cannot reach the activation server, your license remains active for up to 7 days from the last successful validation. Beyond that, the Software enters read-only mode until a connection can be established.
  • The Software also checks for updates via the internet.
  • The Software sends one anonymous install ping on launch, containing a random install identifier, the version, release channel, CPU architecture, a coarse OS label, the current license state, and — only when licensed — a one-way hash of your license key, never the key itself. It contains no personal information and no document content. Aggregate totals are published openly at insights.ventana.tools.
  • No other internet communication occurs. Feather does not collect document content, behavioral or usage data, or crash reports.

4.2 Feather for Android and Feather for iOS

  • An in-app purchase is confirmed on the device by the store. Feather asks Google Play, or the App Store on iOS, whether the signed-in account holds the purchase, including when you tap Restore purchase.
  • Unlocking with a Feather for Windows purchase sends the email address you type, the platform name, and a per-install identifier to our license service, which emails a six-digit code to that address if it matches a purchase. The resulting unlock is stored on your device and checked offline, and is re-checked with our service roughly once a month.
  • An unlock is removed only when our service explicitly reports that the purchase behind it was revoked, for example after a refund. A check that cannot run — because you are offline, because Google Play is unavailable, or because our service is down — never locks Feather.
  • The app sends no install ping, no analytics, and no crash reports. Its full network behavior is listed in the Feather privacy policy.

5. License Keys and Verification Codes

  • Your license key is personal to you (Individual) or your organization (Team).
  • Do not share, publish, or distribute your license key.
  • Do not sell, transfer, or sublicense your license key to third parties.
  • Verification codes sent to unlock a mobile app are single-use, expire after ten minutes, and are meant for the person who owns the purchase. Do not share them.
  • If you believe your key has been compromised, contact us at support@ventana.tools.

6. License Restrictions

You may not:

  • Copy, redistribute, or resell the Software;
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code of the Software;
  • Modify, adapt, translate, or create derivative works based on the Software;
  • Remove, alter, or obscure any proprietary notices, labels, or branding in the Software;
  • Circumvent, disable, or interfere with the trial system, license activation, purchase verification, or any other security or access-control features;
  • Use the Software for any unlawful purpose.

7. Intellectual Property Rights

The Software is licensed, not sold. Ventana Tools LLC retains all right, title, and interest in and to the Software, including all intellectual property rights. This Agreement does not grant you any ownership rights in the Software.

8. Updates

Your license includes all updates within the current major version at no additional cost. Updates may include bug fixes, performance improvements, and new features. Updates are delivered through:

  • Microsoft Store — Managed by the Store.
  • Sideload installations — Managed by Windows via the .appinstaller mechanism.
  • Google Play — Managed by Google Play on your device.
  • App Store — Managed by the App Store on your device.

Updated versions of the Software remain subject to this Agreement unless accompanied by a new agreement.

9. App Store Distribution

Where you obtain Feather from an app store, that store's terms apply alongside this Agreement.

  • Google Play. Feather for Android is distributed through Google Play, and in-app purchases are sold by Google under the Google Play Terms of Service. Google is not a party to this Agreement, is not responsible for the Software, and has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for it. Nothing in this Agreement limits the rights Google Play's terms give you, including its refund rules; where this Agreement and those terms conflict for a purchase made through Google Play, those terms govern that purchase.
  • Microsoft Store. Copies obtained through the Microsoft Store are also subject to Microsoft's terms for the Store.

9.1 Additional terms for Feather for iOS

Apple requires the following, and they apply to any copy of Feather you obtain from the App Store.

  • This Agreement is between you and Ventana alone. Apple is not a party to it, and Ventana, not Apple, is solely responsible for Feather and its content.
  • Scope. The license granted in Section 2.2 is non-transferable and limited to using Feather on Apple-branded devices that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions.
  • Maintenance and support. Ventana is solely responsible for providing any maintenance and support for Feather. Apple has no obligation to furnish any maintenance or support services.
  • Warranty. Ventana is responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent they are not effectively disclaimed. If Feather fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price to you; to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to Feather.
  • Claims about the product. Ventana, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claim relating to Feather or your possession or use of it, including product liability claims, any claim that Feather fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and claims arising under consumer protection, privacy, or similar law.
  • Intellectual property claims. If a third party claims that Feather infringes their intellectual property rights, Ventana, not Apple, is responsible for the investigation, defense, settlement, and discharge of that claim.
  • Legal compliance. You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated by the U.S. Government as a “terrorist supporting” country, and that you are not listed on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
  • Third-party beneficiary. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this Agreement, and upon your acceptance of it Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce this Agreement against you as a third-party beneficiary of it.

10. Data and Privacy

Feather is a local-first application on every platform:

  • All document editing happens locally on your device.
  • Your files are never uploaded, transmitted, or accessed by Ventana.
  • No behavioral or usage tracking and no crash reports. We do not record how you use the Software.
  • On Windows, internet access is used for license activation and validation, update checks, and the anonymous install ping described in Section 4.1.
  • On Android, internet access is used for the in-app purchase, purchase verification if you choose it, an integrity check that decides only which rate limit a verification request falls under, and any images your own documents reference.
  • On iOS, internet access is used for the App Store purchase and the trial item, purchase verification if you choose it, any images your own documents reference, and iCloud, which carries your documents and settings between your own devices under your Apple Account. Feather for iOS sends no attestation token of any kind.

11. File Handling

Feather creates and modifies files locally on your device. You are solely responsible for:

  • Maintaining adequate backups of your files;
  • Verifying the output of any export operations (PDF, HTML, DOCX);
  • Ensuring you do not overwrite important files.

Ventana is not responsible for data loss, file corruption, or unsaved changes resulting from software behavior, crashes, power loss, or any other cause.

12. Third-Party Components

Feather incorporates open-source libraries. On Windows these include, but are not limited to:

  • Markdig — Markdown parsing and rendering (BSD-2-Clause)
  • Microsoft.Web.WebView2 — Preview pane rendering (Microsoft)
  • CommunityToolkit.Mvvm — MVVM framework (MIT)
  • CommunityToolkit.WinUI — UI controls (MIT)
  • Serilog — Logging (Apache-2.0)
  • KaTeX — Math rendering (MIT)
  • Mermaid — Diagram rendering (MIT)
  • highlight.js — Code syntax highlighting (BSD-3-Clause)

Feather for Android incorporates AndroidX and Jetpack Compose libraries, Material Components, Jsoup, the Google Play Billing and Play Integrity libraries, Markdown-it and its plugins, KaTeX, and Mermaid. The complete list, with each component's notice, is in the app under Settings → About → Open-source licenses. Feather for iOS shares the same Markdown-it, KaTeX, and Mermaid rendering components and otherwise builds on Apple's own frameworks.

These components are subject to their respective license terms.

13. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Software is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. Ventana does not warrant that the Software will meet your requirements, operate without interruption, or be free from errors or harmful components.

14. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, in no event shall Ventana Tools LLC be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, loss of goodwill, or business interruption, arising out of or related to your use of or inability to use the Software.

Ventana's total aggregate liability shall not exceed the amount actually paid by you for the Software license.

15. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Ventana Tools LLC and its officers, directors, and employees from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising out of your use of the Software or violation of this Agreement.

16. Termination

This Agreement is effective until terminated. It will terminate automatically if you fail to comply with any of its terms. Upon termination:

  • You must cease all use of the Software.
  • You must uninstall and delete all copies of the Software from your devices.
  • Your license key will be deactivated, and any mobile unlock issued under Section 2.3 will be revoked.

A refunded or revoked purchase ends the license it paid for: on Windows the license key stops validating, and on Android or iOS the app returns to its trial or read-only state at the next check.

Sections relating to intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, and governing law survive termination.

17. Modification of Agreement

Ventana may update this Agreement from time to time. We will provide notice of material changes through our website or within the Software at least 30 days before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the Software after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the updated Agreement.

18. Severability

If any provision of this Agreement is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall remain in full force and effect.

19. Governing Law

This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any legal action arising under this Agreement shall be brought in the courts located in Delaware.

Nothing in this Agreement limits any rights you have under the mandatory consumer protection laws of the country you live in.
