Terms of Service for Feather

1. Acceptance of Terms

Ventana Tools LLC (“Ventana”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) provides the Feather Markdown Editor (“Feather”, “the Software”) as a paid software product. By installing, accessing, or using Feather, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not install or use the Software.

2. Overview

Feather is a native Windows markdown editor. The Software is available for download through the Microsoft Store and our website at ventana.tools. License keys are purchased through Lemon Squeezy, LLC (a Stripe company), our payment provider. You can manage your license key and orders through the Lemon Squeezy customer portal. Feather includes a 14-day free trial period with full functionality.

3. License and Access

Subject to these Terms, Ventana grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Feather on your Windows device(s) according to the license tier you purchase:

  • Individual License — Use on up to 2 personal devices tied to one license key.
  • Team License — Use on up to 10 devices (seats) tied to one license key.

This license is perpetual for the current major version of Feather (e.g., all 1.x releases). Future major versions (e.g., Feather 2) are separate products and are not included in your current license.

4. Free Trial

Feather offers a 14-day free trial beginning on first launch. During the trial, all features are fully available. After the trial expires, the Software enters read-only mode: you may open and view files, but editing, saving, exporting, and formatting are disabled. To restore full functionality, you must purchase and activate a license key.

5. Purchasing and Payment

License keys are sold through Lemon Squeezy, LLC (a Stripe company), our payment provider. All purchases are subject to Lemon Squeezy's terms of service and refund policies. Ventana does not directly process or store your payment information. You can manage your orders and license keys through the Lemon Squeezy customer portal.

Pricing is listed on our website. Prices may change at any time, but changes will not affect licenses already purchased.

6. License Activation

  • An internet connection is required to activate your license key. The Software also periodically re-validates your license in the background to ensure it remains valid. An offline grace period of 7 days is provided — if the Software cannot reach the activation server, your license remains active for up to 7 days from the last successful validation.
  • Each license key has a device activation limit based on your license tier (2 for Individual, 10 for Team).
  • You may deactivate a device to free up an activation slot.
  • If you experience issues with activation or your license, contact us at support@ventana.tools.

7. Lifetime Updates

Your license includes free updates for the lifetime of the current major version. All Feather 1.x updates are included at no additional cost. A new major version (e.g., Feather 2) would require a separate purchase.

8. Use Restrictions

You may not:

  • Copy, redistribute, sublicense, or resell the Software or your license key.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software, unless laws prohibit these restrictions or you have our written permission.
  • Share your license key publicly or with unauthorized users.
  • Circumvent or attempt to bypass the trial, activation, or licensing mechanisms.
  • Use the Software in any way that violates applicable laws or regulations.

9. Intellectual Property

All rights, title, and interest in and to Feather (excluding content provided by users) are and will remain the exclusive property of Ventana Tools LLC and its licensors. Your license grants the right to use the Software — it does not transfer any ownership rights.

10. Privacy and Data

Feather is a local application. Your files and content remain on your device. We do not collect, transmit, or store your documents or personal data. The Software connects to the internet only for:

  • License activation and validation — Communicates with the Lemon Squeezy API to activate, deactivate, and periodically validate your license key.
  • Update checks — Checks for available software updates.

No telemetry, analytics, or usage data is collected.

11. Updates and Maintenance

Updates may be delivered automatically depending on your installation method:

  • Microsoft Store — Updates are handled by the Microsoft Store.
  • Sideload (.appinstaller) — Windows checks for updates on each launch (at most every 12 hours).

Updated versions remain subject to these Terms unless accompanied by new terms.

12. File Handling and Data Responsibility

Feather edits files locally on your device. You are responsible for maintaining backups of your files. Ventana is not liable for data loss resulting from software crashes, unsaved changes, file corruption, or any other cause.

13. Disclaimers

The Software is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. Ventana does not guarantee that the Software will function uninterrupted or be error-free, and you use it at your own risk. Ventana makes no warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

14. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Ventana Tools LLC shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, or business interruption, arising from your use of or inability to use the Software, regardless of the cause of action.

In no event shall Ventana's total liability exceed the amount you paid for your Feather license.

15. Third-Party Components

Feather incorporates open-source libraries and components. These components are subject to their own license terms, which are included with the Software.

16. Termination

Ventana may terminate your license if you violate these Terms. Upon termination, you must uninstall all copies of the Software. Sections relating to intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and governing law survive termination.

17. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated with at least 30 days' notice via our website or within the Software. Continued use after the effective date of updated Terms constitutes acceptance.

18. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Delaware.
