Terms of Service for Feather

Effective Date: September 16, 2026

1. Acceptance of Terms

Ventana Tools LLC (“Ventana”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) provides the Feather Markdown Editor (“Feather”, “the Software”) as a paid software product. By installing, accessing, or using Feather, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree to these Terms, do not install or use the Software.

2. Overview

Feather is a native Markdown editor, published for Windows, Android, and iOS.

  • Feather for Windows is available through the Microsoft Store and our website at ventana.tools. License keys are purchased through Lemon Squeezy, LLC (a Stripe company), our payment provider. You can manage your license key and orders through the Lemon Squeezy customer portal.
  • Feather for Android is available through Google Play and is unlocked either by a one-time in-app purchase sold by Google, or by verifying a Feather for Windows purchase (Section 3).
  • Feather for iOS, for iPhone and iPad, is available through the App Store and is unlocked either by a one-time in-app purchase sold by Apple, or by verifying a Feather for Windows purchase (Section 3).

All three include a 14-day free trial with full functionality. On iOS the trial is taken as a free item in the App Store, which is how Apple asks a pay-once app to offer one.

3. License and Access

Subject to these Terms, Ventana grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to install and use Feather.

On Windows, the license follows the tier you purchase:

  • Individual License — Use on up to 2 personal devices tied to one license key.
  • Enterprise License — Works like an Individual license, with a custom number of seats and discounted, volume-based pricing for teams and organizations. Contact us for a quote.

On mobile, the one-time in-app purchase is a lifetime license for Feather on that platform, held by the account that bought it — your Google account on Android, your Apple Account on iOS — and subject to that store's rules. There is no license key, no device seat count, and no sign-in. Family Sharing is not enabled on either store, so each account holds its own purchase. On iOS the license covers Apple-branded devices you own or control, as Apple's Usage Rules require.

If you own Feather for Windows, you can unlock Feather for Android or Feather for iOS at no additional charge by verifying the email address you bought it with. It does not use up a Windows device seat, and it lasts as long as the Windows purchase behind it remains valid. Otherwise each platform is licensed separately: buying Feather for Android does not license Feather for Windows.

This license is perpetual for the current major version of Feather (e.g., all 1.x releases). Future major versions (e.g., Feather 2) are separate products and are not included in your current license.

4. Free Trial

Feather offers a 14-day free trial beginning on first launch. During the trial, all features are fully available. After the trial expires, the Software enters read-only mode: you may open, view, search, and copy from your files, but editing, saving, creating, exporting, printing, sharing, and formatting are disabled. To restore full functionality, unlock Feather as described in Section 3.

Text you have already written is never discarded when a trial ends. Feather saves what it safely can, keeps the rest in its local recovery store, and still lets you copy that text out or save it to a new file.

5. Purchasing and Payment

Feather is sold through two channels, and which one applies depends on where you bought it.

  • Our website and the Microsoft Store (Feather for Windows). License keys are sold through Lemon Squeezy, LLC (a Stripe company), our payment provider and merchant of record. Those purchases are subject to Lemon Squeezy's terms of service. You can manage your orders and license keys through the Lemon Squeezy customer portal.
  • Google Play (Feather for Android). The in-app purchase is sold by Google, and it is subject to the Google Play Terms of Service and Google Play's refund policy. Manage or request a refund for it through your Google Play account.
  • The App Store (Feather for iOS). The in-app purchase is sold by Apple, and it is subject to Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions. Apple handles refunds for it; request one from Apple through Report a Problem or your Apple Account.

Ventana does not process or store your payment information in any of these cases.

Because every platform offers a full-featured 14-day trial before you pay, we do not offer refunds on purchases made directly through us. Purchases made through an app store follow that store's refund rules instead, and we honor any refund a store issues: the app simply returns to its trial or read-only state. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have under the consumer protection laws where you live. See our License Terms for the full picture.

Pricing is listed on our website and, for in-app purchases, by Google Play or the App Store in your local currency. Prices may change at any time, but changes will not affect licenses already purchased.

6. License Activation

Feather for Windows:

  • An internet connection is required to activate your license key. The Software also periodically re-validates your license in the background to ensure it remains valid. An offline grace period of 7 days is provided — if the Software cannot reach the activation server, your license remains active for up to 7 days from the last successful validation.
  • Each license key has a device activation limit based on your license tier (2 for Individual, a custom number of seats for Enterprise).
  • You may deactivate a device to free up an activation slot.

Feather for Android and Feather for iOS:

  • There is no license key and no activation limit. The store — Google Play, or the App Store on iOS — confirms the in-app purchase on the device, and Restore purchase re-checks it after a reinstall or on a new device.
  • To unlock with a Feather for Windows purchase, you enter the email address you bought it with and then a six-digit code we email to that address. The resulting unlock is stored on your device, works offline, and is re-checked with our service about once a month.
  • An unlock is removed only when that check explicitly reports the purchase revoked, for example after a refund. Being offline, or an outage on our side or Google's, never locks Feather.

7. Lifetime Updates

Your license includes free updates for the lifetime of the current major version. All Feather 1.x updates are included at no additional cost. A new major version (e.g., Feather 2) would require a separate purchase.

8. Use Restrictions

You may not:

  • Copy, redistribute, sublicense, or resell the Software or your license key.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the Software, unless laws prohibit these restrictions or you have our written permission.
  • Share your license key publicly or with unauthorized users.
  • Circumvent or attempt to bypass the trial, activation, or licensing mechanisms.
  • Use the Software in any way that violates applicable laws or regulations.

9. Intellectual Property

All rights, title, and interest in and to Feather (excluding content provided by users) are and will remain the exclusive property of Ventana Tools LLC and its licensors. Your license grants the right to use the Software — it does not transfer any ownership rights.

10. Privacy and Data

Feather is a local application on every platform. Your files and content remain on your device. We do not collect, transmit, or store your documents or personal data.

On Windows, the Software connects to the internet only for:

  • License activation and validation — Communicates with the Lemon Squeezy API to activate, deactivate, and periodically validate your license key.
  • Update checks — Checks for available software updates.
  • Anonymous install ping — Sends one anonymous ping on launch containing a random install identifier, the version, release channel, CPU architecture, a coarse OS label, the current license state, and, only when licensed, a one-way hash of your license key. It carries no personal information and nothing about your documents. Aggregate totals are published openly at insights.ventana.tools.

On mobile, it connects only for:

  • The in-app purchase — Google Play Billing on Android, or the App Store on iOS, confirms whether the signed-in account holds the purchase. On iOS the free trial item is taken the same way.
  • Purchase verification, if you use it — Sends the email address you type, the platform name, and a per-install identifier (as a one-way hash) to our license service, which emails you a code.
  • An integrity check, on Android only — Asks Google's Play Integrity API for a token that decides only which rate limit a verification request falls under. Feather for iOS sends no attestation token at all.
  • Images your documents reference — Loaded by the preview from wherever they are hosted. On Android you can switch them off in Settings, and e-reader mode switches them off for you.
  • iCloud, on iOS only — Carries your documents, scratchpads, and settings between your own devices under your Apple Account. Ventana has no access to it, and you can turn it off.

There is no install ping in either mobile app. No behavioral or usage tracking, and no crash reports, on any platform. See the Feather privacy policy and our general Privacy Policy for the complete field lists.

11. Updates and Maintenance

Updates may be delivered automatically depending on your installation method:

  • Microsoft Store — Updates are handled by the Microsoft Store.
  • Sideload (.appinstaller) — Windows checks for updates on each launch (at most every 12 hours).

Updated versions remain subject to these Terms unless accompanied by new terms.

12. File Handling and Data Responsibility

Feather edits files locally on your device. You are responsible for maintaining backups of your files. Ventana is not liable for data loss resulting from software crashes, unsaved changes, file corruption, or any other cause.

13. Disclaimers

The Software is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. Ventana does not guarantee that the Software will function uninterrupted or be error-free, and you use it at your own risk. Ventana makes no warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

14. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Ventana Tools LLC shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, or business interruption, arising from your use of or inability to use the Software, regardless of the cause of action.

In no event shall Ventana's total liability exceed the amount you paid for your Feather license.

15. Third-Party Components

Feather incorporates open-source libraries and components. These components are subject to their own license terms, which are included with the Software; on Android they are listed under Settings → About → Open-source licenses. Feather for Android also includes the Google Play Billing and Play Integrity libraries, which are Google's and send their own diagnostics to Google.

Where you obtain Feather from an app store, that store's terms apply alongside these Terms. Neither Google nor Apple is a party to these Terms, neither is responsible for Feather, and neither has an obligation to support it; where these Terms conflict with a store's terms for a purchase made there, the store's terms govern that purchase. Apple additionally requires a set of terms that appear in the Feather EULA, including that Apple is a third-party beneficiary of it.

16. Termination

Ventana may terminate your license if you violate these Terms. Upon termination, you must uninstall all copies of the Software. Sections relating to intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and governing law survive termination.

17. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be communicated with at least 30 days' notice via our website or within the Software. Continued use after the effective date of updated Terms constitutes acceptance.

18. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of Delaware.
